[00:55.59]Gwich’in Elder Sarah Abel lived in a small cabin in Old Crow. Outside was the perpetual darkness of the arctic winter and a typical temperature of 40 degrees below zero. But inside, the crackling fire in the wood stove kept the cabin toasty warm.
[01:14.55]Awakening from a nap. Sarah seemed to expect my visit. As l sat on the floor by her bed, she told me the story of"The Man Without Fire", a legend she remembers being told by her grandparents.
[01:23.46]As i closed my eyes and listened to the sound of her voice, the fire, and the wind whistling outside, this moment seemed timeless to me - this could be yesterday, or a thousand years ago.
[01:32.31]Sarah has since passed away at an undetermined age of close to 100 years. But the memory of her soft voice and smiling eyes remain with me as if it were yesterday, and I expect it will for a thousand years.
