[00:59.876]I'm wondering, hope, I know you were with another guitarist at one point, a group called Going Home.Right.How did the two of you meet? How did David and you come together?
[01:11.876]Well, I used to go see David play when he was in the Rain Parade. And we met through a mutual friend, and I was doing music with Sylvia.
[01:26.876]who I was working with. She's a guitarist. And I don't know, we just played the tape for David and Kendra and they really liked it.And we went to the studio.
[01:41.876]I see.
[01:42.876]basically is we started to working together
[01:44.876]So I guess you first saw David in, what, like 1984. would that be?
[01:50.876]Yeah, around there, yeah.
[01:52.876]It's been a while.Yeah.Now, are you both from Los Angeles originally?
[01:57.876]Yeah well I am.
[01:59.876]Right? How about you David?
[02:00.876]Ah yeah
[02:04.176]Do you remember what you first thought when you heard the tape of hope?
[02:08.876]I... When I first heard hope's music I was really I don't know, maybe blown away is a good way to describe it.I just like their music.I like the songs and I wanted to, you know. see them.I wanted to, you know, help them and I just wanted to help. And that's really all I did. They had a really fantastic thing going and I just tried to help.
[02:34.876]How did you guys settle on the name Mazzy Star? It's a fantastic name for what you're up to, I think. It's just a fantastic name.I can't think of a better.
[02:48.876]I think we were just trying to give ourselves of a western name and I don't know.Well, that's what I was thinking about.
[02:56.876]Yeah but it has sort of northern feel
[03:00.376]A northern feel.Yeah, a northern, like, nighttime feel or anything more specific than that or just a. you know, northern sensibility.
[03:10.876]Well you know, it's so much in the name, it just names our name
[03:18.876]The album is in stores today, and Mazzy Star is set for a live appearance here in Los Angeles at the Alligator Lounge October 14th.Yes, all morning long I've been seeing the 15th and Hope Boxens it's the 14th.So, yeah, I was wrong. It's the 14th at the Alligator Lounge.Heidi Berry is opening the show and we are happy to have them in the studio. both Hope Sandoval and David Roback of Mazzy Star. This is actually the second release under the name Mazzy Star. The first one came out in 1990, I guess, on Rough Trade records was fairly soon after. picked up by a capital.Wasn't too long, was it?
[03:58.876]Well, it was after Rough Trade sort of dissolved. really as an independent company. We've always been involved with independent companies.AndThey have A really tough time surviving you know.but it was a little while after they dissolved.
[04:15.076]how are you surviving in the world of major label record companies?Well, I don't really know that we're really in that world. You know, we're just sort of keeping on doing our music.Yeah.And that's really all.Nothing's really changed.
[04:35.076]That's good. You know, it seems like there might be some tendency for a record company to. at some point or another, force itself upon an artist.
[04:49.076]Well we post guard at the door. They don't get in
[04:52.066]yeah(hahahaha)
[04:52.076]so you guys just deliver the album and there it is.Let them figure it out.
[04:59.996]Well, you know, it's all just people and, you know, people are people, but we do our own thing, and that hasn't changed.
[05:05.076]Yeah, that's actually something I wanted to ask you about because it is it hard to hang on to what is purely Mazzy Star?
[05:16.076]Is it hard to kind of shut other things out sometimes.
[05:20.076]sometimes, but usually not.I mean, we just sort of do our own thing. We don't get too involved in what's going on.
[05:45.076]Do you have unease time doing that?
[05:50.276]Well(ah) Is all right. You know people are just people you know People at big level People had a big level small levels They are just people, you know. And whether it was somebody at a small level or a big level, you know, it doesn't really matter. It's just their people. You just deal with them on that level and everything's fine, you know, just we do our own things.Nobody's ever really tried to change that.
[06:13.076]This next song is actually a song that you guys put out on the first album, the one we're just referring to, is called she Hangs Brightly, by the way.And it's I guess it's still available through Capital, isn't it?Still in print?Yeah. You know, do you do a lot of the songs from the first album when you do live performances or is it a special one?
[06:43.076]Yeah, we do a lot of the old stuff when we play live.
[06:49.076]And any particular reason why you settle on this one for this morning?
[06:56.076]We just thought it'd be a good one to play today.OK.Talked about it this morning on the way down here.I thought, let's play this one.Yeah, alive. We do things, you know, whatever we feel like really, old or new, we have things that aren't on any album that we do live.
[07:12.076]We have Mazzy Star live here on Morning Becomes Eclectic. the album. So tonight that I might see is in stores today.
